Throes + The Shine, a Luso-Angolan trio formed by Mob Dedaldino, Igor Domingues, and Marco Castro, active since 2011 and internationally recognized for their memorable concerts, are preparing to release 'Kalunga', their 6th album, on May 10th. In the Kimbundu language, this is a word with various meanings. It can refer to the sea, vastness, and death, while also being used to wish someone well. It is within this balance of meanings that 'Kalunga' resides. An album and a band that exist due to a meeting of communities connected by the sea, bringing forth a rich culture but also bearing the weight of colonialism and discrimination that still need to be fought today. With a more pronounced electronic production, 'Kalunga' marks the trio's first venture as sole producers of a full-length album, with the exception of the track 'Mandinga', on which they collaborated with the Brazilian artist ÀIYÉ. In this process, the band drew from the uniqueness of Angolan music, which through kuduro and semba continues to influence not only Portuguese music but also many artists worldwide, while still embracing the emotions inherent in the genesis of these musical genres. Be it joy, communion, or social revolt, all are present within these 8 tracks. And it is in this rich and human dialogue, where the symbiosis between artist and audience is prioritized, that the trio aims to continue giving life and spirit to their work.
